AI Usage Policy

The Editorial Board of the journal "Studies in History and Philosophy of Science and Technology" does not consider scientific manuscripts written with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) and/or large conditional models (LCM).

When using automated tools and technologies of artificial intelligence (AI), the journal adheres to the principles of academic integrity, transparency and responsibility.

The Journal Policy on the Use of Artificial Intelligence takes into account the recommendations of COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics), Guidelines on the responsible use of generative AI in research developed by the European Research Area Forum (guidelines), Recommendation of the Council on Artificial Intelligence; Ethics guidelines for trustworthy, AI.

For authors.

  1. The use of AI is prohibited:
    • for automatic generation of scientific content of the publication (statement of theoretical positions, description of research methodology and methods, interpretation of results, formulation of conclusions);
    • to create or falsify bibliographic sources;
    • as sources of information in the list of sources used.
  2. It is allowed to use AI for the following purposes:
    • search for literature and analytical materials (with subsequent verification of sources);
    • improving the style of presentation and linguistic literacy of the text;
    • creating illustrative materials (schemes, diagrams, graphs, etc.) without distorting the scientific content
    • assistance in translating or editing the text;
    • technical editing of the manuscript of the text;
    • adjusting contrast, brightness, color balance, if it does not change or remove any information present in the original
  3. Control of the use of AI technology.
    AI technology should be used under human supervision. Authors must carefully edit the results of the use of AI technology to avoid incorrect, incomplete or biased results. The author is responsible for the content of the publication.
  4. Authorship. Copyright and responsibilities may only belong to a human, AI technologies cannot be listed as an author or co-author.
  5. Authors are required to declare any use of AI for data collection, processing, analysis or interpretation in the “Methods” section of the manuscript or in the AI declaration (see example here).

For reviewers and editors

Reviewers and editors should not use generative artificial intelligence to generate reviews of the submitted manuscript (parts of it) or editorial conclusions about it (parts of it). The use of AI may violate the confidentiality of authors and the property rights of authors.

This prohibition also applies to the use of AI technologies by reviewers for scientific review, as there is a risk that this technology will lead to incorrect, incomplete or biased conclusions about the manuscript. The reviewer is responsible for the content of the review.

Generative AI or AI-powered technologies should not be used by editors to make decisions about a manuscript, as there is a risk that the technology will lead to incorrect, incomplete, or biased conclusions about the manuscript. The editor is responsible for the editorial process.

If the editor has reason to believe that an author or reviewer has violated the journal's AI Policy, he or she should notify the editorial board.
