Ukrainian narodolubets and Ukrainian scholar Petro Yefymenko (1835–1808): in the service of public affairs and national science

Abstract

The aim of the article is to highlight the activities of P. S. Yefymenko (1835–1808) as a Ukrainian narodolubets and Ukrainian scholar. The research methods were historical-typological, personalistic, systemic. Sources: archival documents, published autobiographical materials, scientific and journalistic investigations, epistles of P. Yefymenko, memoirs and diary entries of contemporaries, etc. The main results are to find out the peculiarities of Petro Yefymenko’s public and scientific activity. In the northern exile, he continued to take care of Ukrainian national culture, which became the core of his worldview. He viewed the study of people’s lives as a means of national self-knowledge. Further cultural work of the figure in Voronezh, Samara, Chernihiv and Kharkiv is considered. Emphasis is placed on relations with figures of the Ukrainian national movement and zemstvo institutions. It is shown that P. Yefymenko made a significant contribution to the development of statistics, ethnography, folklore, historical knowledge, publications of sources from the Ukrainian past, customary law. The participation of the Ukrainian patriot and Ukrainian studies P. Yefymenko in Ukrainian magazines, in particular in the magazines «Osnova», «Kievskaya Starina», etc.; in important scientific, cultural and public institutions. It was emphasized that the Ukrainian activist held national-democratic ideological positions and outlined a detailed program for studying Ukrainian populism as a national-cultural movement. Brief conclusions. It is proved that during the 1860s and 1900s P. Yefymenko carried out active intellectual activity, which contributed to the progress of Ukrainian public affairs and national science. The practical significance of the article is that the presented material will be of interest to specialists in the context of studying the ethno-national and socio-political history of Ukraine in the second half of the XIX – early XX centuries. The originality of the article lies in understanding the little-known aspects of the national and cultural activities of Ukrainian patriots and Ukrainian scholars.
