The contribution of scientists «Design office «Yuzhnoye» named after M. K. Yangel» in the study of mechanical oscillations in the rocket technicals

Abstract

In this paper, an analysis of the work of scientists and designers «Design Office «Yuzhnoye» named after M.K. Yangel». The works of scientists relate to the study of oscillations and waves in rocket and space technology. The authors of the article reviewed monographs, dissertations, articles in which the dynamics of rocket carriers and spacecraft were studied. The achievements of the team consist of important research works in the field of mechanical oscillations and waves. The key focus was the study of oscillations and the birth of many inventions. Inventions have become the basis for the development of methods for damping oscillations and phenomena of instability in the operation of engines. General Designers of State Design Office "Yuzhnoye" named M.K. Yangel” academicians Mikhail Kuzmich Yangel, Vladimir Fedorovich Utkin, Stanislav Nikolaevich Koniukhov and currently General Designer Alexandr Viktorovich Degtyarev paid and pay serious attention to solving the problem of damping vibrational and acoustic vibrations acting on components of rocket-carrier structures and spacecraft. The following major areas of work in the field of mechanical vibrations in the activities of the State Design Office "Yuzhnoye" are highlighted: 1) theoretical and experimental research to ensure the static and dynamic characteristics of the structures of missiles, their compartments and large-sized assemblies, on the dynamics of transients, and damping methods; 2) autonomous testing of onboard equipment of rockets (automation units, assemblies, instruments) for the effects of transport, impact, vibration and linear loads; 3) measurement of the characteristics of real dynamic processes during flight design tests of rockets and launches of spacecraft, as well as during firing bench tests of engines, stages, upper stages; 4) the fight against low-frequency and high-frequency oscillations in the propulsion system.

The article explains the reasons why this issue has not yet received a proper assessment in historical science. Most of the scientific and design developments had «secret» vultures. Therefore, the works of scientists for a long time were not the property of the scientific community. Only from the 90s of the XX century archives began to open. This marked the beginning of the re-creation of the history of the creative contribution and achievements of the scientific and technical team of the «Design Office «Yuzhnoye» named after M.K. Yangel» in the practical study of mechanical oscillations and waves. This paper presents the history of the birth of fundamental ideas in relation to the dynamics of rocket structures. The paper presents a historical contribution to the development of the ideas of mechanical oscillations and waves of individual scientists and their scientific schools.
