Abstract

In the article, through the prism of periodicals, the academic life of students of Kharkiv higher education institutions is considered as an environment for the formation of Soviet values. In domestic historical science, the question of constructing a «Soviet man» is quite relevant. It was touched by a number of domestic and foreign scientists in their researches. Of particular interest, given its importance in Soviet society, is the study of student youth in the context of the education of Soviet values. The source base of the study are newspapers of Kharkiv higher education institutions (Kharkiv State University, Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute, Kharkiv Aviation Institute, Kharkiv Automobile and Road Institute, Kharkiv Medical Institute), archives of the State Archives of Kharkiv Region and the Central State Archives of Supreme Bodies of Power and Government of Ukraine. The research was performed using special historical and general scientific methods with the involvement of theoretical developments of historical imagology and the history of everyday life. In the course of the research it was established that the vast majority of materials, newspaper articles, which reflect the academic everyday life, were devoted to students taking exams. Such publications are characterized by a typical structure, which included praise for the most successful students and criticism of those who received unsatisfactory grades. Students who demonstrated mediocre academic performance were also criticized. They were accused of indifference to the educational process. Such a practice of public praise and public condemnation was to instill in student youth a sense of collectivism and shared responsibility for the results of educational activities. In addition, the important role of a collective in the educational process is constantly emphasized in relevant publications. The educational process was quite ideological so it was under the close attention of party and Komsomol committees of the school. Caricatures, humoresques and feuilletons were another common form of academic life in the press. In general, higher education in the city’s periodicals was seen as a tool for training the intellectual elite of Soviet society, and intellectual work was legitimized by engaging students in labor practices common in Soviet society and mastering the basics of Marxist-Leninist teachings.
